It's been a year since I've bought my digital SLR camera, and I've decided to try some concert photography. For my first concert shoot, I was lucky enough to accompany the Belgian metal band After All to Ieper. The local band In Chains was promoting their new album Demolition Business, and After All was headliner of the night. They played a wicked show as always. With songs like Frozen Skin and Violent Decline, it's hard not to.

Tools of the trade: my Canon EOS 400D pumped up to ISO1600 and the plastic fantastic EF 50mm f/1.8.

Although you can't see his face in this one it looks fascinating. And it shows some energy. The b/w looks good too in this one.
Thanks for your kind words. I've taken a look at your gallery, and you have some cool shots as well. You're using flash with some diffuser? I see you even use analog film sometimes? I'd love to do that as well, but I don't have a darkroom.
At the most concerts I'm taking photos it's really dark, so yes, I'm often using a flash, in really small venues with an omni bounce.
I don't have a darkroom too, just a bathroom :D
I try to avoid flash as much as possible, like almost never =) I pump up the ISO as high as necessary, using a 50mm f1.8 lens. That seems to work =) But there have to be at least _some_ light of course ;)

The 50mm would be too ... ahm ... what's the word? Too long I think. I mostly use wide angel lenses. I have to buy a super wide angel sometime when I have money again ;)
And at this really small shows there is often hardly any light and the bands are jumping araund ;)
But I'd like to photograph more bigger concerts in the future :)
Yeah, it is quite ... long. Especially on a 1.6x crop camera, that's the equivalent of a 80mm lens on a 35mm camera. But sigma makes some wide f/1.8 primes. Of course, they cost some money, but not as much as their Canon counterparts (in my case) =) They get mixed reviews though. They don't seem to perform that well on f1.8, but still useable, so I've heard.
Yes I'd like to buy a 20mm lens sometime too :D Heard that the Sigma 20mm is quite good and even better than the Minolta one. I recently bought the f2.8 24-70mm from Sigma, my first Sigma lens. Heard some bad stuff about Sigma but this one is really cool. I'd like to buy the Sigma 12-24mm as super wide angel. It only has f/4.5-5.6 but when using this one I will have to use a flash anyway because of the bad light in these tiny concert venues ;)
The Canon 24-70 f2.8 is on my shopping list. It's a bit long on a crop 1.6x but I'm gonna buy a full frame camera some time anyway. Yet, I was able to shoot some nice pics with my 50mm, as you can see here. Nevertheless, The 16-35 f2.8 lens of Canon would be nice to have.
